When connecting a Microsoft Advertising account in Shirofune, the connection may fail with an error code. This article explains what to do for each error code shown on screen.
Check your sign-in method, account type, and access permissions according to the error code. Causes vary by code, and changing the account type alone may not resolve the issue.
Find your error code
Select the error code shown on your screen.
- 105 InvalidCredentials — Authentication failed
- 122 PersonalIdentityNotAvailable — You must sign in with a work or school account
- 123 WorkIdentityNotAvailable — You must sign in with a personal account
- 124 PersonalIdentityMigratedToWork — Your personal account has been migrated to a work account
- 125 PersonalIdentityNotAllowedByCustomer — Your organization requires a work account
- 126 IdentityTypeMismatch — The account type does not match the one registered
If your error code is not listed above, see this section.
Background: Microsoft has two types of accounts
Microsoft sign-in uses two different types of accounts.
| Account type | Description |
|---|---|
| Personal account | A Microsoft account (MSA) created by an individual. It can be created with a company email address as well. |
| Work or school account | A Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) account issued by your organization. |
Microsoft Advertising may also have users registered to sign in with a Google account. For code 126, check for this difference in sign-in method as well.
Both a personal account and a work or school account can exist for the same email address. An error can occur when the account type does not match the Microsoft Advertising registration or your organization’s policy. Codes 122 and 123 specify the required account type, 124 indicates migration to a work account, 125 indicates an organizational policy, and 126 indicates a mismatch with the registered sign-in method or account type.
Common steps: Confirm your account type and reconnect
For error codes 122 through 126, read the explanation for your code, then try the steps below.
Step 1: Open a private browsing window
Open a private browsing window in your browser.
- Google Chrome (Incognito) / Microsoft Edge (InPrivate):
Ctrl+Shift+N(⌘+Shift+Non Mac) - Safari:
⌘+Shift+N
Why a private window is needed: In a normal window, your previous sign-in session may still be active. This can skip account selection and continue with the same account type as before.
Step 2: Confirm the correct account type
In the private window, go to https://ads.microsoft.com and sign in with the email address you want to connect.
If you are asked to choose between "Personal account" and "Work or school account", both types exist for that email address. Choose the type specified for your error code, or the type you normally use to sign in to Microsoft Advertising, and confirm that you can view the advertising account you want to connect. Sign out first if you need to try a different account type.
Step 3: Reconnect in Shirofune
Staying in the same private window, sign in to Shirofune and start the Microsoft Advertising account connection again. On the Microsoft sign-in page, select the account type you confirmed in Step 2.
105 InvalidCredentials: Authentication failed
This code has several possible causes, including an inactive account, an invalid authentication token, or a user that cannot be found. Please check the following in order.
- In a private browsing window, go to https://ads.microsoft.com and sign in with the account you used for the connection.
- If you can sign in and your advertising accounts are shown: Please contact Shirofune Support. Let us know the date and time of the error so that we can investigate.
- If you can sign in but no advertising accounts are shown: There may be an issue with user registration, invitation acceptance, or access to the advertising account. Ask your Microsoft Advertising administrator to check the registration, invitation, and permissions, or try an account that already has access.
- If the advertising account is inactive or closed: Ask your Microsoft Advertising administrator or Microsoft Advertising Support to confirm its status and the required action. Code 105 alone does not establish that the account is inactive or closed.
122 PersonalIdentityNotAvailable: You must sign in with a work or school account
You signed in with a "Personal account", but that email address is registered with Microsoft Advertising as a "Work or school account".
Follow the common steps to reconnect, and select "Work or school account" on the sign-in page.
Use the sign-in method required by your organization for your work account. If you are unsure how to sign in, please check with your IT administrator.
123 WorkIdentityNotAvailable: You must sign in with a personal account
You signed in with a "Work or school account", but that email address is registered with Microsoft Advertising as a "Personal account".
Follow the common steps to reconnect, and select "Personal account" on the sign-in page.
Even a company email address can be registered with Microsoft Advertising as a personal account.
124 PersonalIdentityMigratedToWork: Your personal account has been migrated to a work account
Access to Microsoft Advertising has been migrated to a work account, and the personal account previously used can no longer access it. You need to sign in with a work account.
Follow the common steps to reconnect, and select "Work or school account" on the sign-in page. If you are unsure which work account or sign-in method to use, contact your IT administrator or Microsoft Advertising administrator.
125 PersonalIdentityNotAllowedByCustomer: Your organization requires a work account
Your organization’s policy requires a work account to access Microsoft Advertising. A personal Microsoft account created with a company email address does not meet this requirement.
Follow the common steps to reconnect, and select "Work or school account" on the sign-in page.
This policy is configured on your organization's side and cannot be changed by Shirofune. If you do not have a work or school account, or if you cannot sign in with it, please forward this page to your IT administrator and ask them to confirm your access to Microsoft Advertising.
126 IdentityTypeMismatch: The account type does not match the one registered
The sign-in method or account type does not match the one registered with Microsoft Advertising for that email address. A personal account, a work or school account, or a Google account may be required. This code alone does not tell you which type is correct.
Follow the common steps to reconnect, and select the same sign-in method and account type you normally use for Microsoft Advertising.
If you normally sign in to Microsoft Advertising with a Google account: Shirofune’s Microsoft Advertising connection currently supports Microsoft sign-in only. As a result, “Sign in with Google” is not shown in the connection window. If you have a Microsoft account (a personal account or a work or school account) that has access to the same advertising account, please connect using that account. If you do not, ask your Microsoft Advertising administrator to add a user who signs in with a Microsoft account. Your existing Google user can remain in place. Support for connecting with a Google account is in progress.
If your error code is not listed
If the code shown on your screen is not covered on this page, please contact Shirofune Support with the information listed under "What to include when contacting us" below.
Codes starting with AADSTS come from Microsoft Entra sign-in and consent, a different error system from the numeric Microsoft Advertising API codes on this page. For AADSTS650052 specifically, see What to do when an authentication error (AADSTS650052) appears while connecting Microsoft Advertising. For other AADSTS codes, contact Shirofune Support with the code and the date and time of the error.
What to include when contacting us
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, please contact Shirofune Support with the following information.
- The error code shown on screen
- The email address used for the connection
- The sign-in method and account type used (Work or school / Personal / Google, etc.)
